A Message from Audubon International
Audubon International is pleased to partner with Crescent Resources and the Sanctuary, a member of the Audubon International Gold Signature Sustainable Development Program.
Why would Audubon International, with a philosophy of sustainability, be pleased about development? In a word, stewardship. This land is unique because of its variation of topography affording dramatic views of Lake Wylie. It is significant because of its expanse of mature tree canopy sheltering a variety of flourishing habitats that support many species of native birds and wildlife. Most importantly, it is a jewel in Charlotte’s metropolitan area because its future has been secured in perpetuity as a genuinely ecologically sustainable community.
What does sustainability in development mean, exactly? Simply put, it means using resources for the present generations without compromising the abilities of future generation to meet their own needs. While we believe that ecology, economy and social equity should be equally balanced, the ecological aspect must be first among these equals. This is because our environment is nature's capital upon which all living creatures depend for life.
Audubon International, as a non-profit organization, cannot merge this philosophy into the free enterprise economy alone. So, conservation partnerships are established with corporations, government agencies, other non-profits and private citizens. These partnerships are conducted on principles of sustainability. Long-term management must further the practices of responsible planning and development, habitat conservation, water quality protection and environmental stewardship education.
Our partnership with Crescent Resources is an ideal example of the effort and dedication required to plan, build, manage and live in a sustainable manner. We fully anticipate the Sanctuary to be a national model for sustainable development. Now and for future generations, the Sanctuary will be as protective of nature as it is welcoming to the human spirit.
