Recreation

Love of the outdoors
The enjoyment of nature is at the heart of the Sanctuary’s community amenities, featuring a wealth of walking/hiking trails, wilderness parks, a boating center for kayaks and canoes, and a community lodge where an activities director organizes community events, nature hikes, gardening classes and more.

Nature Trails
More than 20 miles of nature trails meander under heavy tree canopies throughout the Sanctuary. Meditation areas and wilderness parks are destinations along the trails. Small recreational parks are found throughout the community. A full-time natural resource manager helps increase residents’ knowledge and understanding of the varieties of plant and animal life around the community. Take a video tour now with the natural resource manager.

“Once you leave the paved roadside and wind your way down the lush stream corridor trails, tranquility engulfs you,” said Art Oldham of Oldham Planning & Design Associates, the Sanctuary’s master planners. “Fern banks, boulder outcrops, riffles, pools and falls all delight the senses. In open, sunny glades, bird life abounds. Five minutes into a trek, and you are transported by this wonderful natural setting.”

the Sanctuary's trail system will take you by The Camp, the 17-acre waterfront amenity area. Click here to learn more about it.

Wildlife
Residents at the Sanctuary live in harmony with their human neighbors as well as an impressive host of wildlife.

Turtles, beavers and river otters have been spotted along the waterfront. There's a daily symphony of birdsong from the ospreys and red-tailed hawks. Ducks and herons are regular guests in the Sanctuary’s many coves. And, the meadows between the Sanctuary’s heavily forested areas are filled with wildflowers.

Our conservation partnership with Audubon International is dependent on keeping the Sanctuary an ideal environment for homeowners and indigenous wildlife for generations to come.
