Green Building Practices

One of the most significant ways in which we can positively impact the environment is by using green building practices to build our homes. “Green” homes help to protect our forest and wildlife habitats, conserve energy and water resources, keep waste out of landfills and protect air quality. Not only do we promote a sustainable future by building green, green homes are more comfortable, more durable and cost less to maintain.

Green building practices were also employed in the construction of the John James Audubon Lodge at The Camp, which has earned Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Through our parternship with Audubon International, we've developed a list of 100 things you can do to be more environmentally friendly. The rooms pictured below all include items from the list, exemplifying how to employ green building practices throughout the home.

Green features in this kitchen include:

  • framing lumber purchased from renewable resource timber farms
  • aerators in faucets, which conserve water
  • Energy Star appliances

Green features in this foyer include:

  • wall insulation made from cellulose (recycled paper), which has a greater insulation value than fiberglass
  • low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paint - which releases fewer pollutants into the air
  • cork flooring - which is anti-allergenic, insect resistant, and durable - is manufactured from tree bark: the bark of the tree is harvested, but the tree is left uncut

Green features in the driveway and landscaping include:

  • pervious concrete driveways, which reduce runoff and erosion
  • drought-tolerant native plants, which reduce water usage
  • the center rain garden, which filters water from the driveway and downspouts before it enters the general drainage system

These rocking chairs were made from recylced materials instead of wood.
